本書所用參考資料為人盡皆知之典籍，如服爾德之著作及書信，龍鄉（Longchamps）及華尼哀（WagniSre）之回憶錄，葛拉斐尼夫人之書信，台諾萊斯丹之大著《服爾德與十八世紀法國社會》，龔陶賽及阿揚太之《服爾德傳》，朗鬆，勃呂納蒂哀，裴爾索，穆黎諸人論述服爾德之著作。本書首章材料頗有采用斐迖·於斯蒂阿尼（Fidao-Justiniani）之《何謂古典主義者》之處，至論列服氏小說及故事一章，則多引彭維爾為《服爾德全集》（CitedesLi-vres版）所作之《緒論》。
