本書第一篇《老實人》，過去音譯為“戇第特”；這譯名己為國內讀者所熟知。但服爾德的小說帶著濃厚的寓言色彩；“戇第特（Candide）”在原文中是個常用的字（在英文中亦然），正如《天真漢》的原文Ingenu—樣；作者又在這兩篇篇首說明主人翁命名的緣由：故不如一律改用意譯，使作者原意更為顯豁，並且更能傳達原文的風趣。
